An estimated 1.5 million brain injuries occur yearly in the U. S.
- An estimated 5,000 Kansans sustain brain injuries annually.
- Every 21 seconds, someone in the U. S. incurs a brain injury.
- The annual economic cost of traumatic brain injury approaches $48.3 billion dollars.
- Males between the ages of 15 and 25 are the group most likely to incur brain injuries.
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the leading killer and cause of disability in children and young adults.
- Motor vehicle crashes cause 44% of all traumatic brain injuries. Falls account for 26%, assaults and violence 17%, and sports and recreation, 13%.
- Child abuse accounts for 64% of infant/child brain injuries. Children are also injured in falls and sports-related accidents. 50,000 children a year sustain bicycle-related head injuries.
In 2002, 565 requests for assistance were responded to by the Resource Coordinator
- 122 individuals received Resource Coordination Services
- 2,644 attended prevention presentations or participated in local health fairs
- 627 professionals were educated on traumatic brain injury issues
As of September 2003, 384 requests for assistance have been responded to by the Resource Coordinator

- 279 professionals have been educated on traumatic brain injury issues
